Trip to Dover in our ICEr

I had to make a fast trip down to Dover recently so was forced to use our Ford for the trip as I didn’t know what the charging situation was like on the M25 and M20. We stopped at a few services on the way back and were amazed to see just how many had more than one ecotricity DC charger or a combination of fast DC and Mennekes fast chargers. At one service area on the M1 we bumped into the engineers busy installing a second DC charger and the main man said they were putting two on each side at all the M1 services. Really impressed to see this but would appreciate a couple adding at Birch Services and Hartshead Moor on the M62 so we can get from Leeds to Manchester without worrying about running low on power or having to come off the motorway to find some juice. I guess eventually we will get the coverage as the ecotricity owner did say in the news recently that all service stations will have chargers by September 2014 so I guess its just a matter of waiting patiently for us northerners to get sorted out.  Just one note to everyone using the ecotricity outlets, I’ve swapped my home utilities to ecotricity to support this business which is supporting me, I feel we should all do this as a thank you to ecotricity for their sterling services, what do you think ?

  1. Hi Steve,

Glad to hear things are moving ahead nicely on the motorway rapid charge thing. Makes me wonder where all that OLEV funding has gone as I haven’t heard of a single one of the rapid chargers that was supposed to be providing money for coming on line.

I was an ecotricity customer 6 years ago when they were relatively new. I liked the idea of a company founded on the principle of renewable energy and their “turning electricity bills into windmills” is catchy and accurate (probably). I stopped being a customer when I read about 3 different, successive interviews with Mr Vince (CEO and founder) where he was pictured standing next to his latest ‘gas-guzzling’ supercar.

Whilst I was prepared to spend a bit more on my electricity to fund the expansion of a renewable power generating network, I baulked at the idea of funding Mr Vince’s fondness for the anti-Christ of personal transportation. Perhaps it was just a phase he went through. I’m with Utility Warehouse now. I have suggested they do an eco-thing in their marketing… You may know they have a ‘win a Mini’ promotion for new customers. I’d like them to make it “Win a LEAF” instead and have a very cheap, overnight tariff specially for EV owners. All marketing fluff of course but both UW and the customer would win.

    • I did look at UW as my friend is a reseller for them but the 1000 hours free charging at home tipped me over to ecotricity. Re the gas guzzler it early days and he is a young man, most of us went through that stage no doubt next time he will be stood next to a Tesla !. I just need to find £10k to fit out with PV’s and battery storage and my bills will be virtually zero, don’t suppose we will be seeing any of the Baroness’s millions to finamce that then eh ?
