Finally run the figures and decided not to go for a petrol assisted EV due to price alone. As we are not on the market to actually own a vehicle (yet) we have been looking around for a decent trade in for our existing Golf ICE car. The results are quite depressing. Only Ford could come up with a decent package and that’s on a run around new Fiesta Zetec @£150 per month for 24 months taking our PCP Golf as full down payment with Ford settling the outstanding contract. We calculate this will cost £60.00 per month in petrol, lower insurance and lower (£20) annual road tax. These figures make a PCP on a true Hybrid is just out of the question. This is a holding game, hopefully by 2016 either EV’s will have longer ranges between charging or there will be plenty of 2 to 3 year old petrol assisted EV’s available for outright purchase. So there you have it we have to go ICE as the suppliers of EV’s are effectively keeping the prices too high or the residual values too low making the monthly cost far more than a small ICE vehicle, take your pick !.
Still happily driving our Leaf though, been all over the place this past two weeks with charging not an issue apart from Sainsbury’s in Halifax where the two charging bays are always ICE’d up. I asked a young lady to move her Toyota IQ on Sunday so I could charge, the language was incredible ! then she stormed off leaving it in place !. So no charging at Sainsbury’s … again, maybe a couple of cones would deter the likes of Miss Foul Mouth in the future ?.
