The ‘What Car?’ Search is Over !

Finally run the figures and decided not to go for a petrol assisted EV due to price alone. As we are not on the market to actually own a vehicle (yet) we have been looking around for a decent trade in for our existing Golf ICE car. The results are quite depressing. Only Ford could come up with a decent package and that’s on a run around new Fiesta Zetec @£150 per month for 24 months taking our PCP Golf as full down payment with Ford settling the outstanding contract. We calculate this will cost £60.00 per month in petrol, lower insurance and lower (£20) annual road tax. These figures make a PCP on a true Hybrid is just out of the question. This is a holding game, hopefully by 2016 either EV’s will have longer ranges between charging or there will be plenty of 2 to 3 year old petrol assisted EV’s available for outright purchase. So there you have it we have to go ICE as the suppliers of EV’s are effectively keeping the prices too high or the residual values too low making the monthly cost far more than a small ICE vehicle, take your pick !.

Still happily driving our Leaf though, been all over the place this past two weeks with charging not an issue apart from Sainsbury’s in Halifax where the two charging bays are always ICE’d up. I asked a young lady to move her Toyota IQ on Sunday so I could charge, the language was incredible ! then she stormed off leaving it in place !. So no charging at Sainsbury’s … again, maybe a couple of cones would deter the likes of Miss Foul Mouth in the future ?.

I run a telephone & computer supply and maintenance business, mainly VoIP, traditional phone systems & Cloud office systems. www.portelav.co.uk. I've been with the Company since 1981 so pre-mobiles pre-PC's. We are very keen on reducing our own and other businesses carbon output so we all work from home. The EV is just the next logical step towards being carbon neutral both in business and personally. Your kids will be thanking us for leaving a bit of the Planet for them once we push off !

  1. Hi Steven,

Have you looked on eBay for used Amperas? There are quite a few (mostly dealers by the – quick – look of things) and they might even give you a half decent PX on the Golf.

I came to the conclusion the other day that the government should offer very low interest loans for buying new EVs. What do you think of this? I might even get my MP’s opinion. MW

    • Yes I think loans would be a great idea but for me I do not wish to own the vehicle at the end of the lease as I know there are better, longer running cars just around the corner. The Ampera looks good as a used vehicle but right now I don’t wish to actually own one. My working plans mean I will be looking to buy a 200 mile minimum EV by 2016 so that’s when I plan to ‘strike’ and pick up either a new or slightly used P-EV like the BMW i3 or as mentioned a 200 miles plus EV. Its just a pity the residual values are so low as it means leasing too much of the car which meant the ford fiesta zetec comes out less to ‘rent’ and less to run and at the end of the day that’s the overriding requirement an inexpensive run around car unrestricted by distance-to-refuel If HMG underwrote the RV to say 60% then they become economical to lease. Thing is I cannot see HMG doing that as reducing petrol / diesel revenue would cripple this Government without any obvious fiscal return. You can see by the woolly thinking behind their latest missive on EV’s unclear and undecisive as always when if comes to giving a straight yes or no answer. Good luck with your local MP though !
