MacArthur Glen Retail Park

We decided on a trip from Halifax up to the Retail Park near to York, its on the crossroads of the A64 & A19, one of our weekend destinations for a browse and a cuppa. As the Ecotricity fast charger is out at Wetherby Services we had a full 100% charge on board before setting off. On getting there with 50% charge left we discovered the chargers have been changed since last we visited two weeks ago !. They now have two shiny new EVolt charges with A and B flaps with open with the CYC cards, unfortunately the faster A charger side has a plug that we do not possess ! its the same connection as our Type two lead but the female end of our lead was met by … a female termination so we couldn’t plug up. We used flap B the 13amp mains plug so only received about 11% and ended up heading down to Woolley Edge with just 61%. The trip was excellent though as the sun was out so it was about 18c which meant outside for a cup of hot chocolate after our trip around the shops. At Woolley Edge we had the usual 10+ people come up to ask the usual questions, how far….cost….road tax I think I will print the answers on a small flip chart to save repeating myself.  We tell everyone the car is rubbish so hopefully they won’t buy one and the chargers will always be available for us !! fat chance. Meanwhile if anyone knows if there is a convertor to change the gender of our type 2 connector please get in touchImage

About stevenbarrett23

I run a telephone & computer supply and maintenance business, mainly VoIP, traditional phone systems & Cloud office systems. I've been with the Company since 1981 so pre-mobiles pre-PC's. We are very keen on reducing our own and other businesses carbon output so we all work from home. The EV is just the next logical step towards being carbon neutral both in business and personally. Your kids will be thanking us for leaving a bit of the Planet for them once we push off !

  1. Hi Steven,
Looks like you need one of these…
… which will connect the evolt EVSE (as well as just about any other street-side EVSE in the EU) to your, essentially Japanese/US, J1772 port. I’m an i-Miev owner so I don’t know if your LEAF’s J1772 port, unlike mine, can take more than 16A – 11A max, in fact, in my case. If so, there is an alternative 32A version of the cable for a bit more money. These are the cheapest such cables I have found – certainly more so than on eBay and I doubt you could make the cable any cheaper… maybe a bit, unlike the converter I make to go from Type 2 M plug to 13A trailing socket (originally developed for my Vectrix but also useful for other EVs equipped only with a UK 13A plug). Someone is selling one on ebay for £400 whereas the parts to make one are only about £100 or so.
You should write to your MP to voice your frustration about EVSEs – particularly so-called ‘rapid’ (>=43kW AC, >=50kW DC) ones. I did and I actually (eventually) got some sort of sensible reply. Baroness Kramer is the minister in charge of it all and it was she that replied.
    Regards, Martin Winlow.

  2. Just to update you Martin – I had the wrong lead sent to me !! now got the right one and its fine.
