Halifax to Northampton (and back !)

Sunday arrived and we set off for Northampton as that’s where Jeffery West the shoe makers head office is, my favourite shoes !.We arrived at Woolley Edge services to find a Black Leaf already charging, he had come down from Sunderland and had to be brought on a flatbed as Scotch Corner and Wetherby evotricity chargers were still broken (this has been months now). So with this gentleman needing a full charge we went down to the Sheffield services and got a full charge then headed off to Donnington for another charge. Basically we were scoping out which chargers worked and what was available. Leicester Forrest had two flavours of charger the fast one and a smaller unit that took two type two leads so three EV’s can gas up at once although I don’t know how fast the smaller units worked at. The whole 160 miles was very uneventful.  At least 60 miles was done at 50 MPH due to six sets of roadworks, we actually spotted two blokes doing something at one set or works !. Usually I get really ratty when I had to drop the Merc down to 50 but now in Evie I was quite pleased to be running with the rest of the traffic but also conserving our batteries. Once through each set of works I set the cruise to 70 MPH so ran legal speeds all the way down to our last stop at the Roadchef just next to Northampton for a 95% charge. At every station we met other Leaf drivers, one Polish chap even came off charge as they were having a picnic so we could fast charge and be on our way !. I must say we Leaf drivers are a very polite bunch of people. There were two chargers off line on the trip down but with a little bit of planning we hopped past them without incident and didn’t get to less than 30% battery left on any leg of the journey. We stopped at the Hilton on the way in to Northampton, no charging facilities even though the receptionist said they do get Evie’s stopping over. A few external mains plugs with padlocks would certainly attract more customers but there you go an opportunity lost. Having plenty of Amps we cruised around the town centre then out for tea. Next day (Monday) we did our visit to the shoe shop then headed home. I had raging toothache so we cut our stops down to the minimum, Roadchef before we started then Donnington then Woolley Edge and home, again two stations were out of order. I reckon we used about 90 mins more in time on either leg of the journey and saved around £65.00 in fuel. I don’t know about you but I can afford the time if its for free !. I do wish evotricity would get a move on and fix these duff stations, I know its free power and we are very VERY grateful for this but its been dragging on for months now and causing some issues for the EV drivers in the NE wanting to visit Yorkshire. At least when there’s a faulty station further south you have the option to go to the other side of the motorway and charge or cater for this in your route planning and hop past the duff stop-off. Again if Birch Services or Hartshead Moor Services or even IKEA at Bristall were on line we could reach further afield without worrying about losing power and ending up sat on the back of a flatbed truck !. So back to work today and as Mrs B has taken our EV I guess I have to take the Golf, no doubt it will need gas …ho hum
